This gallery page focuses on pottery that has been finisned using primitive firing techniques which creates surface coloration without the use of traditional glazing. Pottery of this type is fired to lower temperatures than usual glazed pottery and is typically open pored. Pottery of this type is more suitable for display as it does not hold water. I use both porcelain and stoneware clays to achieve a clean white background surface that enhances the colours that are burned on the surface. Primitive firings using beach wood and sea weeds brings out pink, yellow and oranges along with various shades of gray. Pots that are pulled from the ashes may be further highlighted using feathers or horse hair or other burnable organics. |
